AS OF SATURDAY, JULY 17, 2010, STAGE 3 CONSERVATION RESTRICTIONS ARE IN EFFECT UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. Watering of lawns, landscaping, shrubs or trees, gardens, use of power washers and washing of vehicles prohibited. A special permit may be issued by the PIWD to allow for watering of newly planted lawns and shrubs or trees for a limited time.
Vegetable gardens may be watered Tuesday through Thursday only. Watering hours are early morning (before 9 a.m.) or late evening (after 7 p.m.) only. A limited number of special permits may be issued for weekend vegetable garden watering on a case by case basis, by the PIWD Operations Manager or the Board. Permitted watering shall be by hand held hose or container only. All hoses must be equipped with an automatic shutoff device. Filling of ponds, pools, hot tubs and similar equipment shall not be permitted under any circumstances.

In July, our community water system pumped an astonishing 1.4 million gallons of water - an average of 45,000 gallons per day. Much of this water usage is related to the recent heat wave. We understand that in hot weather, people take more showers and do their laundry more frequently, but we urge you to conserve water whenever possible, as the system is nearly at maximum pumping capacity

District revenues

The Board of Directors of the Prudence Island Water District has approved this schedule of rates and fees for the 2010 calendar year:

Water Service Rates: $500 annually
Late Payment Fee: 12% APR, $5.00 minimum
Returned Check Fee: $15.00 plus any bank fees incurred by the district
Water Shutoff/Reinstatement fee: $50.00
Water Dumping Penalty: $100.00
Summer/winter scheduled shutoff/reactivation fee $25.00

The new water rate will allow the district to continue improving its operations by allocating $10k for replacement of non-functioning valves and installation of new valves and flushing hydrants at strategic locations throughout the system. The new rate also allows the district to go forward with stage 1 of a 3-stage remediation of the water lines on Governor Paine Road and Allin Lane. Also on the radar for the coming year is an effort to clear brush and debris from the path of existing water lines. This task will help in monitoring for "phantom" leaks and will also assist in timely repairs.

The next Board of Directors meeting will be held August 28, 2010, 1 p.m. at the Prudence Island Fire Station. At this meeting, the board will consider its budget for 2011. No rate increase is being contemplated for the coming year.
