Pumping data for 2009: The district pumped 7,723,770 gallons of water in a 12-month period, an average of 21,161 gallons per day. While 2009 is not the best year on record for water usage, it's a distinct improvement over 2003, when the system pumped an astonishing 13,500,197 gallons - nearly 37,000 gallons per day. The improvement in resource management is largely due to completion of the Narragansett line remediation by the Prudence Island Utilities Corp. in the winter of 2007-08. The water district will build on this effort by systematically remediating system trouble spots. We know that less water leaking from our infrastucture means more water available for our community.
At its meeting of October 3, the Board of Directors considered and adopted bylaws regarding water conservation. You can read the adopted bylaws at this link.
The district's fiscal year ended on September 30, 2009. We have submitted our financial information to our accountant for review, and he has completed the annual financial statement. The salient figures in this report will be included in our annual statement to the electors.
There's a chill in the air, and soon our seasonal friends will be closing up their houses for the year. The water district reminds all its customers to shut down their water and drain their pipes if they plan to leave the island for any extended period of time. Leaks from freezing can cause costly damage to your home and result in enormous water loss that affects the entire community. Additionally, the district imposes a fine for water dumping that results from leaking pipes. Play it safe! Shut down your water and drain your pipes!
